Jim “Poorman” Trenton
Jim “Poorman” Trenton is widely known in Los Angeles by virtue of his multiple #1 radio shows on several local stations, his TV Show “Poorman’s Bikini Beach” and many other television, film stints and stunts.
How It All Began
It all started in the latter 80s when Poorman wrote two restaurant guidebooks entitled “The Poorman’s Guide to Gourmet Dining in Pasadena for Under SixDollars” and “The Poorman’s Guide To Gourmet Dining on the Westside of Town for Under Six Dollars”. He was attending law school at the time at Loyola in Los Angeles. Both books eventually made the Los Angeles Times’ Critics List. Poorman began his media career as a critically acclaimed author. During the first day of publication, he was selling his Pasadena guide to one of the restaurants mentioned in it. The restaurant was located across the street from the then underground radio station KROQ FM in Pasadena. Rick Carroll, legendary program director of KROQ, was in the buffet line at the restaurant. He asked for a free copy of the book and Poorman gave him one. This was the first time he’d given away a book and it turned out to be a life-changing moment! (Poorman did eventually graduate from law school with a JD degree, but never practiced law.)
Poorman in Radio
Poorman began his radio career starting with KROQ FM shortly thereafter. He approached Rick Carroll with the idea of doing an on air restaurant review in order to generate more book sales. Rick remembered getting the free book and agreed to let Poorman go on the radio (he’d never been on the air before), as long as he got the restaurants to give free meals to Rick and all the jocks. When asked what they should call him on the air, Poorman said "Call me Poorman, because the book is The Poorman's Guide."
The name stuck and he was a natural on the radio! During the following decade, he created and hosted the #1 Nighttime show “Loveline”, co-hosted the KROQ morning show, and was an hour-long guest on “Oprah” on her program entitled "the most outrageous DJs in America". He was among the first radio hosts in the country to play music of such future superstars as No Doubt, Live, Goo Goo Dolls, Radiohead, Seal, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Social Distortion.
Poorman went on to do another #1 show as the evening DJ on hip hop giant KPWR-FM Los Angeles (“Power 106”). He briefly hosted “Desperate and Dateless” on top forty juggernaut KIIS-FM Los Angeles, before piloting a one year morning show on dance station KACD/KBCD-FM Los Angeles (“Groove 103.1”).
His next endeavor involved buying his own afternoon drive airtime on KPLS-AM Los Angeles, and developing, marketing, and hosting a format called “Anti-Radio”. This pure new music format featured the music of unsigned bands and artists of all musical genres from independent record labels only Poorman gave 1500 bands their 1st radio airplay.

In September 2001, Poorman joined the “Rick Dees in the Morning Show” on KIIS-FM Los Angeles as Rick’s sidekick through 2004. Currently, Poorman hosts an entertainment talk radio show airing from Noon-1PM M-F on KCAA AM 1050 in the Riverside/San Bernardino broadcast market in Southern California. The show is broadcasting live from New York.
In addition to his unparalleled success in Los Angeles radio, Poorman also spent five years on the largest radio network in Australia, Austereo Group Ltd., phoning in the bi-weekly “Hollywood Trash Report” on stations in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane, Newcastle, Canberra, and Adelaide. Poorman provided the Aussies with TMZ style extreme gossip from his network of "spies". This report became so popular with the folks ‘Down Under’ that on two occasions, the network flew Poorman to Australia to host listener trips to Bali, Indonesia and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Poorman's TV Career

Poorman has enjoyed success with nine television shows. The first was “Adventures with the Poorman” (KDOC-TV Los Angeles/Saturday nights); as creator, owner, and host, Poorman informed the viewer on ‘how to enjoy the good life without spending the big bucks!’

Next up came “Request Video” (KDOC-TV Los Angeles/five days a week), a live call in video program with a studio audience, celebrity guests, band performances, and Poorman as host. Guests included Billy Bob Thornton, Ice T, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Gwen Stefani and No Doubt, Social Distortion, Bjork, and Tommy Lee. This show was a forerunner to MTV’s “TRL”. Soon thereafter, Poorman was hired as a field reporter on “Good Day LA” (FOX-TV Los Angeles/five days a week). His features included everything from ‘live’ on camera wake up calls of U.S. Congressmen to bungee jumping.
After a one year run, Poorman created, owned and hosted “The Love Channel” (KDOC-TV Los Angeles/five nights a week). This ‘live’ late night show was the forerunner to MTV’s “Loveline”; viewers called the program with love problems and received advice from myself (Jim Trenton) and a female medical doctor as well as celebrity guest ‘love doctors’. Guest ‘love doctors’ on the show included Jillian Reynolds, Sublime, Cory Feldman, Kelly Slater, and director David Zucker.

The “E!” Network subsequently hired Poorman as a correspondent on “The Gossip Show”. He got the gig as a result of his work on Australian radio doing the “Hollywood Trash Report”. Poorman was actually required to wear a suit as he joined Army Archerd (Daily Variety), Liz Smith (New York Post), Ted Casablanca (“E! News”) and others in dishing the celebrity dirt.
On June 28, 1999, Poorman created, hosted, and marketed “Poorman’s Bikini Beach” (in Los Angeles, it has aired on KCAL-TV, KTLA-TV, KDOC-TV, KRCA-TV, KJLA TV, and KBEH MTV TRES). Internationally, Bikini Beach has aired M-F on FUEL TV Australia since June 2007 and since January 2012, SONY Max in Africa nightly. Since its inception, 225 original episodes have aired and it is now in production in its 13th year.
